Contemplation Shawl

It started with the thought: What if contemplation isn't idle but essential?

In a world that values never-ending and highly optimized productivity, sitting with unfocused thoughtsβ€”letting them meander, circle back, or dissolve entirelyβ€”feels contrarian.

Contemplation is (one of) capitalism's antithesis: it's slow, nonlinear, and inherently "unproductive." Yet it's also where we dream, problem-solve, and reclaim agency over our minds.

I know this intimately. During my years of burnout and mental health struggles, my brain's timeline shrank to surviving this hourβ€”never mind, next week. Recovery came with an unexpected gift: the return of mental space to contemplate. To think beyond immediate survival. To play with ideas again.

The Contemplation Shawl is an homage to that long and transformative journey, featuring an asymmetrical triangular shape with a textured garter stitch body and winding cable borders. This design encourages you to "make each stitch sweet", resulting in a soft, squishy fabric that rewards slow and deliberate knitting.

Knit starting at the top tip, the shawl begins with an intercrossing cable border, quite fitting as a meditative exercise in attention and awareness (might want to shoo others out of the room!).

Once this border is established, the body expands into a rhythmic garter stitch, creating that iconic textured fabric that invites the squiiiiishhhhhh (and sniff). The final ribbed edge is finished with a polished tubular bind-off, providing seamless intergration to balance the shawl's ribbed stitch flow.

As you knit: Where will your mind wander? To a creative project left dormant? A boundary that needs guarding? A dream you've been too busy to water?

Protect that time fiercelyβ€”it's your sacred space of agency and autonomy.

Pattern Instructions

Construction

This asymmetrical shawl is worked from the top down, increasing one stitch every right-side row. The design begins with establishing a cable pattern, transitions into a garter stitch body, and finishes with a ribbed border. The shawl ends with a tubular bind-off.

Finshing

Tubular Bind-Off for 2x2 Ribbing

  1. K1.

  2. To switch the position of the next 2 stitches, bring the yarn to the front, then insert the RH needle through the back of the 2nd stitch.

  3. Carefully slide both stitches off the LH needle.

  4. First, catch the live knit stitch with your LH needle, then slide the purl stitch on the RH needle back to the left.

  5. Continue working in 1x1 rib until you reach the next 2 knit stitches, and repeat steps 2-4.

  6. Once you have completed the row, break the yarn on your current piece, leaving a tail that is 3-4 times the width of your work.

  7. Thread the tail onto a tapestry needle.

  8. Insert the needle into the 1st stitch purlwise.

  9. Bring the needle to the back of the work, and then insert the needle from back to front into the 2nd stitch knitwise (this step may feel a bit awkward!).

  10. Insert the needle into the 1st stitch knitwise and slip this stitch off the needle.

  11. Next, insert the needle into the 2nd stitch purlwise.

  12. Again, insert the needle into the 1st stitch purlwise and slip this stitch off the needle.

  13. Bring the needle to the back of the work and insert it from back to front into the 2nd stitch knitwise.

  14. Repeat steps 3 - 6 until you have only 2 stitches remaining.

  15. Insert the needle into the 1st stitch knitwise and slip it off the needle.

  16. Finally, insert the needle into the last remaining stitch purlwise, slip it off the needle, and weave the end into your piece.
